Once you have emailed or contacted me by phone I will arrange an appointment for the first assessment session. This initial assessment session is where you can find out more about how counselling works and give some background about what has led you to seek counselling. I always tell clients assessment works both ways; so it is also a chance for you to find out whether you will feel comfortable talking to me. Finding the right counsellor for you is very important and there is no obligation to proceed further if at assessment you find you've changed your mind. I do my utmost to put you at ease, offering a warm and accepting space in order to build trust and a sense of safety in talking to me. If you are seeking help for your child then this initial session can be a joint parent/child one to enable you both to meet with me and explore the counselling process. I can put you at ease and answer any questions you have. It is especially important for a child to meet with me and find I interact on their level and offer a child friendly approach can help them feel less anxious about talking with an adult.
I offer in person, face to face as well as online counselling within a private, discrete setting in my own dedicated counselling room in Ballynahinch, Co Down. If you need support do get in touch by phone or email and ask for an initial assessment session to find out if this is the right way forward for you (or your child).
I appreciate that taking the step to seek out a counsellor can be a daunting thing for most people, whether it is for yourself or your child. I provide professional and confidential counselling that will put you or your child at the centre of the process. My counselling approach is called Integrative, which is where different counselling approaches such as Person Centred, Creative, CBT and others are blended throughout the process. A way of working together that is tailored to your individual needs.
My 21 years counselling of individual adults and further specialist training in counselling children and young people including five years’ working as a school's counsellor has given me vast experience of providing a professional and competent counselling service.
My previous background as a qualified Nurse and eight years as a Teaching Assistant working with children with special needs in mainstream schools has equipped me with professional experience and ability to understand your perspectives and unique needs and contexts, providing warmth, non-judgement and valuing your worth.
I also have counselling experience in a special school and can adapt how I work if a client finds verbal communication challenging. I work using creative and play-based approaches especially when working with children.
